Okanagan Spring Brewery

Sleeman Breweries (Okanagan Spring Brewery Vernon, BC)

Okanagan Spring Brewery began as a small family-owned brewery in 1985. The Okanagan Spring Brewery was acquisitioned by Sleeman Breweries in 1996 UFG started serving the Okanagan Spring Brewery in 1997 by re-bedding the old sand 7’ diameter sand filters with a mutli-media configuration and installing new SS laterals to improve the BW efficiency. The filter vessels were not new when acquired by the brewery and already showed signs of deterioration. This retrofit served the brewery for over a decade, however the controls were all manual which required an operator to perform backwashing as required. The filter vessels were also showing signs of corrosion both internally and externally.

Upgrades

In 2019, Sleeman Breweries assigned a new team to start upgrading the water system and bring it up to modern standards. Okanagan Spring Brewery again contacted UFG to begin design and selection of a new UV system to replace an existing UV that was over twenty years of age.

Working with our corporate partner in the USA, Aquionics Inc., we selected a UV unit and submitted a proposal to the team at Sleemans. After their review, Sleeman Breweries contracted with UFG to supply and commission the UV system. The UV unit was successfully installed by a contractor and was virtually commissioned with the assistance of UFG and Aquionics team.

The next stage of improvements involved the design of a water filtration system to replace the existing 7’ diameter sand filters. One of the challenges we faced was the location of the existing filter system, which was situated on a elevated platform. UFG worked with the local engineering team at the Okanagan Spring Brewery and together we came up with a design that would allow us to use four (4) 48” diameter fiberglass filter vessels and a high efficiency filter media capable of achieving the desired levels of filtration.

The existing elevated platform was strengthened with the use of steel beams at strategic locations to ensure the structure would be able to withstand the weight of the four 48” diameter filters, manifold piping and controls. The design encompassed setting the four fiberglass filters and the platform and building an elevated walkway to allow the operator access to the new filter controls. The filter system incorporates the Clack WS2H top-mount control valves with integral flow meters and ancillary valves to allow the system to be operated as a parallel quadplex system or a progressive flow system.

The new UV system was commissioned in late 2019 and the filter system, was commissioned in late 2020. Both of the systems now provide high quality water to the Okanagan Spring Brewery
